If I don't have a Bible background, what is a good way to learn what is in the Bible?
The Bible is its own best teacher. The best way to learn the Bible is to consistently read through the Bible. Usually for someone without a lot of Bible knowledge, there are three common obstacles they encounter:
If any of these describes your situation, consider getting an easy-to-read children's Bible. My top pick would be Family-Time Bible in Pictures, paraphrased by Kenneth Taylor. Try reading it as you would any book, completing it in the shortest amount of time. Rather than thinking of it as a "Children's" Bible, focus on the real-life situations of men and women like us. Read it through several times, each time thinking about what the main characters faced in their situations--what they were learning about themselves and about God.
By having the key historical narrative stories in sequential order, you will develop a quick feel for the main events, the main characters and the big plot, without becoming waylaid by lists of names, building projects or confusing prophetic passages.
Someone once asked a Bible translator which translation was the "best one" to read. His response? "The one you obey."
